Hives
April 21st, 2008
Saturday afternoon, when we changing his slobber covered shirt, we discovered a quickly spreading rash all over his stomach and shoulder. We called the nurse line, they said probably “something viral”, maybe fifth disease, and wait it will go away in a few days. It didn’t seem to both him at all. He’d had a cold all week and maybe a low fever so some sort of random toddler rash was suspected. By bath and bedtime most of it was gone, and we thought not much of it. Until the next day, when it struck again. We were at a friends eating some passover leftovers when the whole back of his head broke out with the rash again. Since it was weekend walk-in hours at the pediatricians, we opted to have it checked out. After 2hrs of waiting at the peds (it went away and came back again in that time), our doc came in and said “hives”. The only thing is that we have no idea where it came from. He hasn’t had any new foods, and the context of each appearance of the hives was completely different. Doc gave him a dose of benadryl and said to give more if they show up again. He slept for almost 4 hrs after that benadryl, woke up for an hour to eat, and almost feel back asleep in my arms before sleeping the full night. Today again before and after daycare, we saw small patches of them but nothing covering large parts of his body, gave him a little more benadryl. Currently, we’re stumped as to what is causing them, though recent discredited suspects have been weeds, new shoes, pineapple, seasonal allergies?
Post-benadryl baby (didn’t even make in 2 minutes in the car):

The only other thing that comes to mind would be something in his clothes, like the detergent, fabric softener, wool, latex etc.

I feel for you. It could be hard to figure out. I was thinking the same thing as Justin.

Definitely isn’t clothes. We’ve been using the same Seventh Generation perfume-free, dye-free stuff for years. No new clothes either.
He did, however, get new shoes. The ones he’s holding in the picture might have gotten some sort of plant on them. They seem to be the only common element. Unfortunately, he hid one of his other shoes, and we’ve been putting those on him with socks and he’s been mostly fine…
