First kiss :)
May 6th, 2008
Sunday we went to the playground at the farmer’s market after watching the water baloon tossing contest at Carrboro Day. We ran into Shauna and Miles, whose spot we snagged at our daycare last year since she decided to stay home. Miles is about the same age as Avery. Both of us moms ran around making sure there were no head dives off the play structure or getting run over by the bigger kids. We were talking about the daycare (Miles is coming to our daycare in August this year) when we noticed that Avery and Miles faces were very close together. I was almost afraid Avery was biting him or something. They were kissing! I’m pretty sure there was tongue since they are both open mouth slobberers. Avery just learned how to kiss and apparently Miles had just learned too. They figured they’d test it out. It was so cute! I only wish I’d gotten a picture! This is the type of photographic embarrassment that would come in handy when he’s 16..

Avery is now a year old! Hello, toddler. Its amazing to think how much he has changed from the little 3lb guy NICU baby to a nonstop, giggly, demanding toddler.
For his birthday, we didn’t do too much. I toyed around with the idea of having a big party, but I just didn’t have the time, money, or energy for that. I wanted to do something along the lines of picnic/park, but since it was 40 degrees and raining that wasn’t going to fly. He had fun playing inside with all his new toys. I made him a cake, Aunt Lisa came over, and we went to Elmos for a quick dinner.
A few videos of the occasion.
No photographic tooth sitings yet.

I attempted to take a picture of Avery’s first tooth. It looks like number two will be joining it soon.
No luck.
you can almost see he has a tooth now

Well, actually you can’t (sorry we tried). It’s official though. The first tooth has arrived! Number two doesn’t look that far behind. Watch out if he gets ahold of one of your fingers to chew on, that little sucker is razor sharp. And yes, we’re still breastfeeding.. for how long now?.. that all depends on the little guy and his tooth.

Teeth on the horizon
September 7th, 2007
He’s been teething for months. This time is not a false alarm though! His bottom 2 teeth are raised and red, and it looks like they’re coming through soon. He’s also been literally chewing on everything in sight, his hand, teethers, shoulders, etc. I contemplated trying to take a picture of his budding teeth, but then I realized it was futile since I can barely get in his mouth to see them myself, let alone take a picture.
The first cold and sleep
August 10th, 2007
Avery got his first cold. I had a minor cold (sinus pressure, runny nose, coughing) a few weeks back. Corey then caught it from me and was much more miserable, and this past week Avery got it too. He’s been pretty snotty and coughing a lot and just generally fussy. I tried to suction his nose with the bulb thingy so he could breathe better instead of snort, but hes quite the squirmer. Corey and I had to both hold him down to get anywhere near his nose, and then he cried like the end of the world was coming when we successfully got some snot out. I figure he’ll be fine as long as he can breathe. It’s clearing up now.
He got very clingy the last few weeks. He gets upset if you even look like you might be leaving for a second. He also will just lay on my chest and look around now. The other night, he wasn’t interested in sleeping (everytime I put him down I’d hear the whine) and he just snuggled and laid there on my chest, eyes wide open. I let it slide and let him sleep with us since he’s been sick and coughing himself awake a lot. He usually just comes to bed with us after the first waking at night. He was sleeping through the night for months, and suddenly is back to waking up since our trip to california. Originally, I was planning on trying some sleep training to get him to stay asleep all night again soon, but lately I decided that in the interests of milk supply and stranger anxiety, that will wait until once the breastfeeding stops. Besides, I couldn’t do the “cry it out” method, I think its detrimental to the trust your baby has in you. I tend to subscribe to most (but not all) of the philosophies behind attachment parenting so I think he’ll be better off for it, despite what some certain people have said about our “holding him or playing with him too much”.
Anyways, it’s 1am and I should go to sleep before my time is up!
Babyhood

Lately I’ve noticed that Avery gets scared of things now. Yesterday I went to go vacuum his room. He was in the jumperoo (I hate that word) and I turned the vacuum on to start. Before, he would just look at it with awe following it around with its little light. This time, he had this terrified look on his face and started crying hysterically. I quickly turned it off and picked him up. I though, “Oh, well maybe hes just freaked out by it being so close to him now on the ground.” I played around with it for a minute and let him touch things and then turned it on to try and start again. He immediately turned into me and started crying and squirming. It was amazing. He was scared. I noticed that now I get the same effect when the dogs suddenly bark at the door or someone walking by outside. He jumps and starts crying in fear. It was kind of a sad moment for me actually. Its like the very first chip away from naivety and innocence. I understand the utility of fear. Its sort of like pain; it seems like it would be great to not have, but it plays an important role in signaling to you something is up. Its like now he knows now that the world really isn’t a safe place and he should keep an eye out.
